What is URL Rewrite

SEO Tipshttp://spaces.msn.com/members/prabhjot [SEO Tips] URL rewriting is a technique where the web server rewrites the URL requested by a client and returns a document from a different location. URL rewriting can be used for many tasks such as creating top-level URLs which do not exist in the physical directory structure, hiding the fact that the physical location of a document has changed or even that the implementation of the document has changed. URL rewriting can also be used in a limited fashion to obtain some of the same benefits as Content Negotiation.

Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.

Even though as we'll see in amoment I could have left it alone, because the directorystructure was also changing I decided to clean up the linkswithin the blog entries to reflect the new layout. Once donewith that I had a functioning blog with all my old content atmy new location.

If you are running some *nix operating system, (in fact, if you have apache installed on any operating system), there will likely be a copy of the apache manual on your own machine, right here, and the excellent mod_rewriting guide, lives right here.
